5/9/2007 - Beastie Boys Step It Up with 'The Mix-Up'

Our beloved NYC faves, the Beastie Boys, are bringing fans a whole new experience with 'The Mix-Up,' a full-length instrumental record to be released on June 26.

Thanks to our friends at Nasty (as in 'Hello Nasty'), I got to talk to Mike D about the new album and the group's upcoming tour. He tells me that they plan to release a second version of 'The Mix-Up' later down the line, which will include vocal collaborations with other artists and remixes with a wish list of producers.

PopEater: Can you tell us who you might be doing collaborations with?

Mike D: We just made our list so we have to see who says yes and who likes us and who hates us.

PE: Who's on the list? Give me your top three.

MD: It's tricky because we have producers and performers on there, but we have M.I.A. We're big fans of hers. She's on the A-list. Mark Ronson is hopefully doing something with somebody, but I'm not at liberty to say because that's up to him. We played some shows in Australia with Snoop Dogg and we had a very nice time with him so we're hoping to do some stuff with him some time.

NC: I heard you're playing two shows per town on your upcoming tour.

MD: The idea was that in certain cities, certain select gala cities, we're going to do a slightly bigger show that's more like our usual show. We'd be playing a lot of hip-hop and also some [instrumental] songs and mixing it all up. And then, if we have time, in the same city, [we'd] play a smaller place like a little theater and play a show that's mostly like the flip of that that's mostly instrumental.

In a word: awesome. How you feel about the Beastie Boys playing an instrumental set? Tell us what artists you'd like to see featured on the next incarnation of 'The Mix Up.' Who knows? The B-Boys just might be reading your suggestions.

5/1/2007 - Beastie Boys "The Mix Up" due July 10

We have been waiting and waiting to find out something about the new Beastie Boys album. Well, wait no more because we have the entire scoop!

Today the Beastie Boys new album, which is titled The Mix Up, was provided to Capitol Records associates for promotional review, along with some additional information about the release. The album will be released in North America on July 10, not June 26 as we reported earlier. The album is, in fact, completely instrumental. By "completely instrumental," we mean NO VOCALS.

Get ready to hate us because we have been invited to a private listening party of the new album in Los Angeles tonight. We will provide additional information about the release after the party. We wanted to share the love so we invited select members of the Beastie Boys Message Board in Los Angeles to attend this party with us. So look to hear what those people have to say about the album on the message board.

4/26/2007 - Beastie Boys name new album

Mike D gets ready for new record and Live Earth gig
Beastie Boys have revealed exclusively to NME.COM that their new album will be called 'The Mix Up' and will be released in June.

Bandmember Mike D said the follow-up to 2004's 'To The 5 Boroughs' will be "radically different" to its' predecessor. The rockier record will instead hark to the style of the band's classic albums 'Check Your Head' and 'Paul's Boutique'.

Mike D said: "We play instruments on the whole album, as opposed to sampling. There's more rock on there. If you know us you can trace the influences and they're no completely surprising. Someone who listens to us casually might think 'What the hell are these guys doing?'

"It might make you flip your wig right off, or your hairpiece, if you're a casual listener."

The star also talked about the band's forthcoming appearance at the London leg of the Live Earth shows, which aim to promote action to confront global climate change.

Beastie Boys will perform at Wembley Stadium alongside the likes of Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Snow Patrol.

Speaking about the cause, Mike D said: "It's come to the point where drastic measures have to be taken now. To really create a mass consciousness of what needs to be done, mass action, it's gonna take mass awareness. And these huge concerts around the globe are probably one of the best means of doing so."

Asked if he would be playing any new material at the event, the star replied: "By that point we'll already be playing new songs. But I dunno - you don't wanna do 'Jazz Odyssey' in front of a crowd of 60,000."
